What Should Your Robot Be Good At?
- Pets that shed Anti-tangle brushes and docks that swallow a week of fur.
- Hardwood floors Soft brushes and mops that do not leave streaks or puddles.
- Carpet and rugs Suction that reaches the pile, and mops that lift out of the way.
- Mopping too Roller and spinning mops that scrub, not just wipe.
- Less emptying A dock that empties the bin for you, so a busy week needs no attention.
- A tight budget What a cheap robot still does well, and what you give up.
Before you buy
Measure Three Things First
The most common robot vacuum regret is not suction. It is a robot that gets stuck under the sofa, cannot climb into the kitchen, or has nowhere to dock.
Under the sofa
Slide a ruler under your lowest sofa, bed and cabinet kick. Robots with a laser turret on top often stand close to 4 inches; the slimmest current models are nearer 3.
Door thresholds
Check the tallest step between rooms. Makers state a climbing height; if yours is taller, the robot cleans one room only.
A spot for the dock
Washing stations are the size of a small bin. Leave clear space either side and in front, near an outlet.
How we work
Specs Read Line by Line, Not Lab Scores
We do not run a test lab, and we say so. We read every current model's specifications from the maker, compare them on the same eight points, and recommend the robot that fits each kind of home. We never print prices or star ratings, because both change faster than any page can.
Brands do not pay to be listed. When you buy through a link we may earn a commission from Amazon, at no cost to you.

Robot Vacuums for Pet Hair
Hair, not dirt, is what defeats most robots: it wraps the brush and clogs the bin. Brush design, bin size and a self-emptying dock matter more than the suction figure on the box.
