The Best Solar Pool Skimmers for Leaves, Pollen and Bugs
Five solar skimmers that clean the water's surface while you do something else, compared on how long they run, how they charge when the sun hides, and how often you will empty the basket.

A solar pool skimmer does one job: it keeps the surface of the water clear. It floats, drifts around the pool on a battery topped up by a small solar panel, and pulls leaves, pollen, bugs and fur into a basket before they have time to sink. There is no cable, no plumbing and no outlet to find. You put it in the water and it works while you are at work, or asleep.
It is worth being clear about what that means. A skimmer cleans the top of the water and nothing else. It does not scrub the floor, climb the walls or lift the silt that settles overnight. People who expect a skimmer to replace a pool robot are usually disappointed, and people who add one to a pool that already has a floor robot are usually pleased, because the two jobs barely overlap.
Below are five current solar skimmers, the figures each maker states, and the trade-off that comes with each one. If your pool also needs the floor cleaned, read our main guide to robotic pool cleaners first, then come back to see which skimmer fits next to it.

How We Choose
We do not own a pool or run a test lab, and we will not pretend to. Every pick here was chosen by reading the maker's own listing for each current solar skimmer, line by line, and comparing all of them on the same points. We list what the maker states and say so. Where a listing is silent, the table says "Not stated" instead of guessing, and we never write that a battery will last for any length of time the maker does not give.
-
Stated runtime
The hours of cleaning the maker says one full charge gives, and the conditions that figure applies to.
-
Solar and backup charging
How long the sun takes to refill the battery, and whether the box includes a charger or adapter for cloudy stretches.
-
Pool types
Whether the listing names inground, above-ground or infinity edge pools, or leaves it open.
-
Salt water
Whether the maker says the skimmer tolerates salt and chlorine, with the figure if one is given.
-
Basket and mesh
The size of the debris basket and the fineness of its mesh, where the listing gives them.
-
Obstacles and edges
Obstacle avoidance, bumpers, wheels and shallow water safeguards that keep it off steps and walls.
-
Controls
Whether it comes with a remote or an app, or just runs on its own.
-
Weight and price tier
The listed weight you lift out, and a budget, mid-range or premium tier. We never print a price.

Solar Pool Skimmers Compared
The table puts the five side by side. Every figure is the maker's own, taken from its listing. Runtime is the stated maximum, and the maker's own wording on cloud and low light is quoted in the reviews, so read each number as an upper limit and not as a promise for your pool.

The Best Solar Pool Skimmers, Reviewed
Each review opens with a short verdict, then who should buy the skimmer and who should not. The detail underneath is there for when two picks look close.
Top pick · Best overall solar skimmer
Betta SE Plus
The all-round pick. Betta lists over 30 hours of operation, a 3.5 hour adapter recharge for cloudy spells, a shallow water safeguard and a 200 micron basket.
- Mid-range
- Stated runtime Over 30 hours
- Modes Auto surface cleaning, remote
- Salt water Salt and chlorine compatible
- Basket Large, 200 micron mesh
- Buy it if
- You want a skimmer that keeps running through a gray week and you would rather have a backup charger than hope for sun.
- Skip it if
- You need a stated basket volume or a stated weight limit on debris. The listing gives a large basket but no size.
The SE Plus is Betta's step up from the SE, and the difference is mostly about weather. Betta says it runs for over 30 hours, even in cloudy or rainy conditions, with the backup adapter charging. Under direct sunlight it recharges in 5 to 6 hours while cleaning, or in just 3.5 hours on the adapter, which is the shortest stated recharge on this page.
The listing is careful to say what it is: a surface cleaner that does not clean the pool bottom. It targets leaves, dust, pollen, insects and pet hair, and catches them in a large basket with 200 micron mesh. Twin motors are described as salt and chlorine tolerant, and the title lists salt and chlorine compatibility.
For navigation, Betta lists ultrasonic radar for obstacle detection and a shallow water safeguard meant to stop it getting stuck on pool stairs. A wireless remote changes modes, and a UV-resistant coating is listed. The weight is 15 lb. The listing does not state the basket volume or a maximum pool size, so confirm those with Betta if your pool is large.
What stands out
- Over 30 hours of operation, per Betta
- 3.5 hour recharge on the backup adapter
- Shallow water safeguard for pool stairs
- Salt and chlorine compatible, with a wireless remote
Trade-offs
- Basket volume and maximum pool size are not stated
- Surface only, so the floor still needs a robot
Best for salt water pools
Betta SE
The simpler Betta. The listing gives 30 hours or more per charge, a 5 to 6 hour recharge in sun and twin salt chlorine tolerant motors.
- Mid-range
- Stated runtime 30 hours or more
- Charging Solar 5 to 6 hours
- Modes Continuous, remote
- Salt water Salt chlorine tolerant motors
- Buy it if
- You have a salt water pool, a standard shape and a pool that gets plenty of direct sun.
- Skip it if
- Your pool is round and under 14 ft across, or you want a backup charger. Betta says the SE is not suitable for small round pools and does not list an adapter.
The SE is the model most of Betta's range is built on. The maker states continuous cleaning for 30 hours or more on a single charge, even in rainy or cloudy conditions, and a recharge of 5 to 6 hours under direct sunlight while it works. The motors are described as patented twin salt chlorine tolerant units that drive the propellers directly, suited to freshwater and saltwater pools alike.
The basket is a large fine-mesh design with 200 micron mesh and a top handle. Betta's instructions are to dock the skimmer, open the cover and empty the basket, with no need to take the whole unit out of the pool. The title also lists obstacle avoidance and a remote control, and says it suits above-ground and inground pools.
There is one limit worth reading before you buy. Betta says the SE is not suitable for round pools under 14 ft, and that if it circles, you restart it. Its stated weight is 14.5 lb. The listing includes winter storage advice: rinse it, let it dry completely and store it indoors at room temperature away from high heat.
What stands out
- 30 hours or more per charge, per Betta
- Twin salt chlorine tolerant motors
- Basket empties at the pool without lifting the unit out
- Winter storage steps in the listing
Trade-offs
- Not suitable for round pools under 14 ft
- No backup adapter listed, so cloudy weeks rely on the panel
Best lightweight skimmer for any pool shape
Betta Flex
The lightest skimmer here. Betta lists Eco and Normal modes, a soft-touch casing, a 5 to 6 hour solar recharge and use in infinity edge, inground and above-ground pools.
- Mid-range
- Charging Solar 5 to 6 hours
- Modes Eco and Normal
- Basket Large, size not stated
- Pool types Infinity, inground, above-ground
- Buy it if
- You want an easy-lift skimmer, you have an infinity edge or tiled pool and you like choosing between a periodic Eco sweep and continuous running.
- Skip it if
- You need a stated runtime, a salt water rating or a backup charger. The listing gives none of the three.
The Flex is built around handling. Its soft-touch casing is described as gentle on pool sides and tough on debris, and its low-profile body glides across the surface day and night. At 8.3 lb it is by far the lightest skimmer in this guide, which matters when you lift it out dripping.
Betta lists two cleaning modes. Eco Mode runs smart, periodic sweeps, and Normal Mode runs continuous 24/7 cleaning. A full charge takes 5 to 6 hours of direct sunlight. The listing names infinity edge, inground and above-ground pools, which is more specific than most.
The basket is described as spacious with an easy-lift top handle for no-mess emptying, with no flipping or disassembly. What the listing leaves out is a stated runtime, a basket volume, a mesh rating and any statement about salt water. If your pool uses a salt system, check with Betta before you choose the Flex over the SE or SE Plus.
What stands out
- 8.3 lb, the lightest skimmer here
- Eco and Normal modes
- Listed for infinity edge, inground and above-ground pools
- Soft-touch casing that is gentle on pool walls
Trade-offs
- Runtime, basket volume and mesh rating are not stated
- No salt water statement and no backup charger listed
Best for heavy leaf and pollen loads
Beatbot iSkim
The big-basket skimmer. Beatbot lists a 9 L basket, a 24W panel with a 10,000 mAh battery, up to 28 hours of operation and salt water use below 5,000 ppm.
- Mid-range
- Stated runtime Up to 28 hours
- Charging 24W panel, charger included
- Modes Not itemized, app control
- Salt water Salt below 5,000 ppm
- Buy it if
- Trees overhang your pool, you get heavy pollen or leaf drop, and you would rather empty a basket less often.
- Skip it if
- You want a stated weight or pool type. The listing gives neither.
Beatbot's iSkim is the skimmer to look at when the problem is volume. Its oversized 9 L basket has a 29 by 270 mm wide intake, so it can take everything from fine leaves and pollen to larger debris, and the maker says the size reduces how often you need to empty it.
Power comes from a 24W solar panel and a 10,000 mAh battery, and Beatbot states up to 28 hours of operation, even in low-light conditions. A dedicated charger is included, so you are not tied to the sun for the first charge or for a long gray stretch. App control is in the title, along with smart obstacle avoidance and UV and corrosion resistance.
The listing says six guided wheels help the iSkim move along walls and into corners, and that it is built for saltwater pools with salt below 5,000 ppm. Beatbot backs it with 3-year protection and 30-day returns. Weight and pool type are not stated, which is the main thing to confirm for an unusual pool.
What stands out
- 9 L basket with a wide intake
- Up to 28 hours on a 24W panel and 10,000 mAh battery
- Charger included, app control
- Salt water use below 5,000 ppm, with 3-year protection
Trade-offs
- Weight and pool types are not stated
- Mesh fineness is not stated
Best for floor and surface in one purchase
Beatbot Sora 10 with iSkim
The one-purchase answer. The bundle pairs the Sora 10 floor robot, listed for up to 300 minutes and pools up to 3,229 sq ft, with the 9 L iSkim skimmer for the surface.
- Premium
- Charging 24W panel, charger not itemized
- Modes Not itemized
- Basket 9 L
- Buy it if
- You have no pool robot yet and want the bottom and the surface covered by one maker.
- Skip it if
- You already own a floor robot, or you only need the surface done. Then a skimmer alone is the cheaper route.
This listing sells two machines together: the Sora 10 cordless robotic pool vacuum and the iSkim solar skimmer. The Sora 10 side is listed with up to 300 minutes of continuous floor cleaning from a 7,800 mAh battery, pools up to 3,229 sq ft, 6,800 GPH suction and cleaning of the floor, walls and waterline, with shallow water cleaning down to 12 inches.
The skimmer side repeats the iSkim story: a 9 L basket, a 24W solar panel feeding a 10,000 mAh battery, and up to 28 hours of operation, even in low light, in the maker's words. One oddity to check: this listing mentions two guided wheels for the iSkim, while the standalone iSkim listing says six. Treat the wheel count as unconfirmed until you see Beatbot's own page.
Salt water use, weight and charger contents for the bundle are not itemized in the listing. The bundle sits in the premium tier because you are buying a full floor robot as well. If you only want that robot, our Beatbot guide covers the wider range.
What stands out
- Floor, wall, waterline and surface cleaning from one maker
- Sora 10 listed for up to 300 minutes and 3,229 sq ft
- 9 L skimmer basket and a 24W solar panel
- One purchase, one brand to contact
Trade-offs
- More machine than you need if a floor robot already cleans your pool
- Wheel count conflicts with the standalone iSkim listing; salt water use and weight are not stated
Skimmer or Robotic Pool Cleaner: Do You Need Both?
The honest answer for most pools is that they solve different problems. A skimmer works on the water's surface from the moment debris lands. A robotic pool cleaner works on the floor, walls and waterline after dirt has settled or been left behind. Which one you need first depends on where your mess ends up.
What a Skimmer Catches
The listings for these skimmers name leaves, flower petals, dust, pollen, insects and pet hair. All of that is light and floats, at least at first, which is why a skimmer that runs through the day can pick it up before it waterlogs. The Betta SE Plus and Betta SE both say plainly that they clean the surface, and the Betta Flex listing describes collecting debris across the pool surface day and night.
What Still Sinks
Anything heavy enough to drop, such as wet leaves that missed the basket, grit, sand and fine silt, ends up on the floor, and a skimmer will not reach it. The Betta SE Plus listing says outright that it does not clean the pool bottom. Algae on the walls and the film at the waterline are also outside a surface skimmer's job.
Pairing a Skimmer With a Floor Robot
If your pool already has a floor robot, a skimmer reduces what reaches the bottom, so the robot's filter fills more slowly. If you have neither, decide by your debris. Mostly leaves and pollen from nearby trees points to a skimmer first. Mostly sand, dirt and algae points to a robot first, and our cordless robotic pool cleaner guide is a good place to start. The main robotic pool cleaner guide compares corded models too, and the above-ground pool robot guide suits a soft-sided pool.
One robot on the list deserves a mention: the WYBOT S2 Solar Vision is a floor robot with a solar charging setup and an AI camera, not a skimmer. Its listing gives three charging modes, 8 cleaning modes, an 180 micrometer filter basket and coverage up to 3,229 sq ft, and sits in the premium tier. It is an alternative if you want a solar-assisted floor robot, but it will not skim the surface. Our WYBOT guide covers the brand's wider range.
Solar Charging, Cloudy Days and Batteries
The sun is the fuel, so the question every buyer asks is what happens when it hides. The listings answer some of this and leave other parts blank, and we only report what they say.
How Long the Panel Takes
Betta states 5 to 6 hours of direct sunlight to recharge the SE, SE Plus and Flex, and for the SE and SE Plus that happens while the skimmer keeps cleaning. Beatbot lists a 24W solar panel feeding a 10,000 mAh battery on the iSkim. None of the listings gives a recharge time for the Beatbot panel, so there is no like-for-like number between the two makers.
Backup Charging for Cloudy Weeks
Two listings address a bad-weather stretch directly. Betta describes the SE Plus as dual charging, with a 3.5 hour adapter recharge, and says the 30 hour figure holds in cloudy or rainy conditions with the backup adapter charging. The iSkim comes with a dedicated charger. By contrast, the SE and the Flex list only the sun as a charging source, so they rely on a sunny spell to refill.
What Runtime Figures Mean
Betta gives over 30 hours, or 30 hours or more, for the SE Plus and SE, and Beatbot gives up to 28 hours for the iSkim, even in low light. These are the makers' maximums. A fully charged battery lasts this long under conditions the listing does not specify, and real results depend on the pool, the debris and the weather. Use them to compare, not to plan your week. The Flex lists no runtime at all.
Basket Size and Emptying
A skimmer that fills up stops skimming, so the basket matters as much as the battery.
Volume and Mesh
Only Beatbot gives a basket volume: 9 L on the iSkim, with a 29 by 270 mm intake. Betta's SE and SE Plus describe a large fine-mesh basket with 200 micron mesh and state no volume, and the Flex says only spacious. The mesh matters for pollen and fine dust, since a coarse screen lets them slip through, so the 200 micron figure on the two Betta models is the only fineness number on this page.
Emptying Without a Struggle
Betta describes top handles on the SE and Flex, and the SE listing says you can empty it by docking the skimmer and opening the cover, without taking it out of the pool. The Flex is described as needing no flipping or disassembly. The iSkim listing says the larger basket reduces how often you need to empty it, though it does not describe the opening. If you have heavy leaf fall, the larger basket gives more room between visits, and the lightest unit, the Flex at 8.3 lb, is the easiest to lift out when it is full.
